The Natural Beauty of Wood Shutters

Many of the exterior window shutters you find at your local hardware or home improvement stores are relatively inexpensive, but they are normally the non-functional type that can’t be stained or painted. Wood shutters are the most traditional material, but with today’s new materials such as fiberglass, aluminum, vinyl and composite materials are becoming the material of choice.

Shutters have appeared as a long lasting, affordable and safer choice by offering protection and security to your home and improve upon the general look of your home. Shutter companies are now manufacturing shutters in varied sizes, patterns, and shades. This way, you are not limited to a few choices offered by your local home improvement stores.

No matter what, you will be happy if you buy custom or standard size shutters and pleased with how they have been manufactured and engineered to last a very long time and stay maintenance free; you’ll especially like how they ensure a level of protection and security. Even if you’re still looking for the traditional wood window shutter, with the new composite materials, they can easily be made to look like wood, but without all the hassles that comes with any solid wood products, like warping and peeling paint. If it’s still wood you’d like, all exterior window shutter companies offer a nice selection of wood shutters that will handsomely hang next to any window and create the natural look you desire.

Famous Fireplace

Fireplaces are famous just on there own. They are a house hold name that will never loose its flame. Before history was ever chiseled on a slate or written on walls or paper there has been fireplaces of some form. It ranks only second to language in its importance to the human race. Whether a person is on an open prairie or in a huge castle, a fireplace is a very simple and effective way to contain and control a fire for the purpose of safety, heating and cooking. There is a wonderful progression from the old fire pit to the more modern day in home fireplaces.

Originally fireplaces were made of a few stones places in a circle with a sort of roof around it with a hole in the top for the fums to escape. I think of the Indian Tee Pee as a great early fireplace option. Sadly much of the heat would escape this design not to mention the indoor pollution and ash dust. But this was a necessity to live in the cold winter time of the year. At some point in the 18th century the fireplace went from just a necessity to a major centerpiece of the home. The form of the fireplace was as important as the function. This is when new materials and ways of making fireplaces started to show up. Abraham Darby was an early inventor of making a stronger metal. His work led to iron as a very important part of construction. Cast iron fireplaces became the norm as a longer lasting and better heat dispersing fixture. Iron really holds the heat well.

Now after many years of perfection the fireplace has so many styles to choose from. They are named after famous people like the Napoleon fireplace. There are people becoming famous because of the fireplace like the fireplace whisperer, Walter Moberg. Written about in major classic novels and photographed for the coffee table book, fireplaces really do carry such a physical and emotional hold on the humans that live in there light today.

Outdoor Grills and Dining Areas Are Perfect for Holiday Parties

Sandie was incredibly excited at the beginning of this holiday season. And while this might come as a surprise to some people, the reason for it was that she volunteered to host the holiday work party at her house. She had only moved into her new home the year before and one of her biggest desires in purchasing the house was to install an incredible backyard kitchen area so she would be able to host events like the holiday party. She had recently completed the work and was so proud of it and excited to share the space with others that she presented the idea to her company fun committee before discussions of the party had even entered the office.
Fortunately, most of the food was going to be brought in the form of potluck. Sandie was prepared for it and had ample counter space as well as a nice refrigerator and food warmer. She added these as optional features hoping to have just such a reason to use them. The built in barbeque grills that were included with the island model she chose would be perfect for grilling the chicken breasts she planned to serve.

As the day approached Sandie began decorating the outdoor area. She had a beautiful rose garden off to the side and she placed lights and sculptured decorations in the garden. She also put wreathes and berries along the fireplace mantel as well as placed smaller ones on the table and counter area. She had scented candles that would create a great introductory ambiance though she knew the smell of foods would quickly overtake it. The night of the party she was so excited that her dream had actually come true and she was hosting her first party in her beautiful outdoor kitchen and dining area. And while she loved rain, she greatly hoped that on that evening the sky would remain clear and the stars would shine.

Take a look around and decide just what decor, just which pieces of furniture that you can not live without, then get rid of the rest. Decorating becomes a wonderful and fun process, filled with simplicity and elegance. Along with the new blinds, you may want to change the color of your paint, or to hang wall paper to either match or compliment the blinds and shades that you have chosen.

You may also decide to repaint old wooden cabinets, adding more color and texture to any small space. And while saving money for the next installment of home improvement, instead of replacing floors and tile, you can throw down a rug. Or, you may decide to just paint your floor. Finding places to store your items can be a bit of a nuisance when you do not have enough space, so find some benches or cabinets at your local second hand store to keep your items in and clear up your clutter.

You may find that painting these pieces of furniture with stencils and designs, will turn them into pieces of art and not just storage space. One way to liven up your inside, is to bring in the outside. Small herb gardens in the kitchen and house plants will do wonders for the inside atmosphere. All of these activities are inexpensive ways to create a warm place to come home to, even if it is a small, warm place.

Preparing Your House for Winter

Fall is fast approaching and as the weather begins to cool down our thoughts quickly turn to the holiday festivities. But don’t forget about your house. I’m not just talking about hanging some Christmas lights and setting out some cute lawn ornaments; there are several things you can do now to help get your house ready for those cold winter months.

One of the first things to check is the roof. Whether you are expecting rain or snow, it is always a good idea to check the roof for missing shingles or leaks. Most leaks, if caught early, can easily be repaired with some extra shingles and tar; however, if it has gone on too long you may need to call out a contractor for some more serious repair work. While you are on the roof, you can also check the gutters and make sure that they are clear of any debris. It is best to get that done now, as it is typically not a good idea to be climbing on ladders or the roof during the winter months because of the greater risk of injury. If you live in an area that gets particularly cold and icy, you will want to insult your pipes. Wrapping your pipes in insulation now is much easier than waiting till it gets colder or repairing one that’s broken.

Having stored all lawn and deck furniture for the winter, inspect the deck. If you have not treated it in awhile, now would be a good time. This is a fairly simple procedure that involves pressure washing the surface, letting it dry thoroughly and then coating it with water sealer. This will not only improve the appearance of your deck or patio but also add years to its life.

The last thing to check is the windows. Not only will you want to clean and check the windows themselves but also the seals. A good seal will help keep the warm air in and electric bill down. You can also use this time to check your blinds. Many companies like Next Day Blinds offer repair services. Next Day Blinds services will be much higher if you call them now, rather than the middle of a snow storm.

Preparing your house for the colder months is a lot of work; however, it is worth it to have a warm, uneventful winter.

Loving my portable hot tub

I love my new portable hot tub. All the features and health benefits in a portable tub with no need to run a special electrical or having to put in special plumbing. In a few simple steps your throwing the end of your water hose and turning it on then your setting the thermostat to the temperature you love to soak in, and next thing you know your soaking in your very own hot tub.

For me the portability is a must. I am renting right now and am not investing in improving my landlords property. Also I live in a very hot and sunny climate so I want to be able to have the hot tub in the shaded side of my patio in the summer and then I can move it into the sun in the winter when I would like to be in the sun and get a little son on me and right now with it going into fall with in the next couple of weeks I will drain and move my hot tub to the other side of may patio and enjoy late afternoon sun and the hot tub together.

Since getting the hot tub I am much more relaxed. Having the opportunity to soak in hot water and the messaging action of the jets is a very very welcomed relief at the end of the day and I have to say there are frequently mornings I begin my day with a nice soak in the hot tub. I get more use from it than I actually thought I would and I thought I would use it a lot… but I am using it every day and many days two or more times. I don’t have the aches and pains in my neck and back any longer and sleep much better and deeper. This was a worth while investment in my health.

Next Day Blinds Provide Both Style and Privacy

Quite often, windows are not seen as decorative center pieces, however with the proper treatments from the variety of options offered by Next Day Blinds, the window just may find itself becoming the focal point of any room in the house. Windows in the city, and now even in the suburbs can create many an awkward situation. In cities such as New Yorkor Chicago, when apartments are stacked right up next to each other, quite often one may find themselves staring straight at their neighbors.

Once while visiting a friend on the Upper East Side of New York, I was brushing my teeth at the kitchen sink, as there was no sink in the tiny bathroom. I looked up, with the toothbrush in my mouth, only to see my friend’s neighbor walking through his kitchen in his underwear. The thing is, if I could see him without his knowledge, who could see me without mine? Custom shades and blinds can prevent this unintentional invasion of privacy. There are many options when considering the window treatments of one’s home, not only for the purpose of privacy, but decorative purposes as well.

Next Day Blinds offer many styles, and many colors and design options, from crisp solids to funky and stylish patterns, they have it all. They can brighten up a dark room, and give accents to furniture, pillows and other fabrics used in decorating. Bulky and dark curtains are out, stylistically speaking. They darken a room and make all seem heavy. They can impair one’s view, while blinds offer the privacy, but with the option of adjustments so that one may still see out, or let the light in. Another aspect to consider is the texture. Plastic blinds may be inexpensive, but face it, they look inexpensive. One may spend just as little on a bamboo or Venetian shade, but the visual that is created by the natural materials serves to create the impression and the look of the natural, more enduring world.

Creating an outdoor oasis

Haven’t you always wanted just the most perfect backyard? The one of your dreams with built in grills, an outdoor sink and so much more? Well designing the perfect back yard space is no easy feat. It takes a lot of planning and work to make the most out of an outdoor space. Here are some tips to make it work.

When you are planning an outdoor space, just like with any other space, you need to take into consideration how much room you have. Maybe you can’t have both the trampoline and the cal flame grill, because of you know fire hazards. But that does not mean you can’t have everything that you want in your back yard. It’s all a matter of planning it within an inch of its life to get the perfect fit.

When planning an outdoor oasis you should decide if you want to have any plants in your yard. If you do you should plant them first before bringing in anything else. There is nothing more difficult than trying to plant trees around something else. Also it’s important to plan a landscaping design. Most nurseries will have this service available for you, so it takes all the guesswork out of the planning. You should consider the climate you live in before choosing any types of flowers or otherwise. You don’t want to have something that you have to constantly worry about taking care of. If you live in a desert, perhaps you should choose some desert dwellers before you choose pretty flowers. If you are lazy, you will just watch your money die because you did not water them or take care of them properly.

When you are done planning, the hard part is over, then you just have to get to work and after it’s all done get down to the business of enjoying your space.

The birth of choosehottubsdirect.com

Every company has a back story. A story of how the business started and how they ended up in the business world doing what they do. Some businesses have been around for generations and the business has been handed down through the family and generations. Others come out of nowhere or are grown organically out of great ideas or just everyday life. Some grow out of bad customer service experiences or a bad experience with a company. That is exactly how choosehottubsdirect.com came to be. The founder and owner of the company had a bad customer service experience with a company and decided instead of just getting mad, he would get even.

While he was renovating his home he had finally made it into one of the most stressful and time consuming parts of a home renovation, the bathroom. It can be one of the most labor intensive parts of the process even if it’s just a small space. Redoing a bathroom takes plumbing and electrical and a lot of experience.

Well, the story goes that Steve purchased a bath tub for his bathroom remodel on a website and was waiting for it to be delivered. And when it got there it did not fit in the space that he had set aside for the tub, it was way too big! And when he tried to contact the company he was unable to get the customer service he though that he deserved.

That was the when he had an idea, instead of just writing the retailer a badinternet review, he instead decided to give them a little competition. So he started his internet website and the rest is history.

This is an example of how easy it can be to find you niche. If you look in the most everyday and normal places, you can find everyday hints of ways that you can be a success.

The Perfect Backyard Garden to Surround the Hot Tub

One can not go wrong when decided to add a spa or hot tub into the design of their yard and into the style of their life. So much research has been done on the positive effects hot tubs have on ones health, and many hot tubs, choosehottubsdirect.com, from this company are offered at such reasonable prices, that this is fast becoming a luxury that the working person is able to afford. Home spas are no longer for only the wealthy, and the relaxation provided alone is worth it. Not to mention, if one is physically active or involved in sports that may result in injury from time to time, this is just about a necessary appliance in ones lives. Many injuries do not require the care of a doctor or a trip to the hospital, but just simple and gentle time soaking in the hot water and floating weightless, relieving the pressure on the injured area and allowing the healing process to take place.

When one wishes to create an oasis or a desert paradise to surround their spa, it is easy to find plants in the desert that create not only visually beautiful gardens, but those that provide the added therapy of delicious smells, without the smoke of incense or candles. Just nature. One of the hearty varieties that requires just a bit of water during the warm summer months, is the Jasmine. The scent is intoxicating, especially during dusk, the time when most people are just getting home from their hectic day, and ready to relax in their spa. This particular plant will fare better if planted in partial shade, so if one has a gazebo built around their hot tub, just along the borders would be the perfect spot for the Jasmine. This plant in the extreme summer heat of Arizona, will generally bloom only twice, once in the spring and once in the fall, and it is worth the wait throughout the rest of the year.

Another such plant is the Mexican anise. The entire plant, with or without the blooms, will fill ones garden with the gentle smell of licorice. The leaves of this one can also be dried and made into a tea, which will have the combined flavor of licorice and vanilla. Perfect tea to sip during the cooler months soaking in ones spa or hot tub. This one will bloom once during autumn, and must be covered during the coldest of winter nights to prevent frost damage. These are just two of the many options for creating incredible desert gardens to surround and add comfort to the spa and to the entire backyard oasis.

Grilled Grilled Cheese

In the culinary imagination, drop in grills change the way we daydream about food. There is something more exotic about having the possibility of cooking outside always at our disposal than even a limitless number of burners inside. There is a primal element to grilling that also comes with a feeling of being ultra-civilized, and the combination can be quite sumptuous. It certainly adds to the experience of cooking and eating, and there is nothing like the taste of food on the grill.

One of the staples of childhood, grilled cheese, can be re-invented on the drop in grill, and the taste is so sensational, you will wonder why you didn’t always prepare it this way. The thrill of the grill marks on bread that you cut yourself never gets old, and there is an enormous versatility here that will have you experimenting with your own idea of the perfect grilled cheese sandwich. Suffice to say, grilled cheese on a grill is something that one needs to add to their outdoor cooking repertoire. One idea about outdoor grilled cheese that is worth a few experiments is the addition of other ingredients. All chefs agree that grilled cheese marries very well with other flavors, and also, a little can go a long way. So, it’s important to choose with consideration, and also to keep the other ingredients to one or two, in order to not overwhelm the meal.

For meats, pepperoni and ham seem to be the most popular choices, and there are of course many other salted meats that can be tried to find your favorite. There are also options like hot peppers, and olives, and all the different types of these are worth sampling. For cheese, thinking out of the box is recommended, as there are many types that all melt differently. Recipes that call for halloumi in grilled cheese on the grill have earned a soft spot in our hearts. And there are certainly more, and they all make childhood seem present, only perhaps even tastier.

History and Benefit of Hydrotherapy and the Hot Tub Spa

For years, a hot tub spa was a luxury that only the very wealthy could afford. Spas were expensive to purchase and to install and operated, and on top of that, there were not reliable. They broke down often, and were expensive to repair. However, the spas today are made with superior materials and are the product of many years of improvement in the manufacturing process. The prices have lowered and now many can afford the ‘luxury’. Hot tubs and spas have consequently became very popular additions to homes throughout the country.

Throughout history, in various civilizations and cultures throughout the world, spas were an integral aspect of daily life. There were the bathhouses of Rome, which were social centers and a daily activity of the upper classes. In ancient Japan and China, the society made use of the baths and hot spas as well. What these ancient civilizations knew, was that hot baths were good for the body, they relaxed muscles, opened the skin’s pores and just generally promoted better physical health. On top of the therapeutic benefits, cleanliness signified prosperity, and to simply be clean was considered to be healthy. During those times of history, only the very wealthy could afford the time and the facilities.

Today, the medical and scientific world are aware of the benefits of hydrotherapy and the use of hot tubs. Ailments and injuries can be improved, and the physical pain eased with regular treatments of hydrotherapy. Those treated regularly are people suffering from multiple sclerosis, arthritis, and any other ailment that involved the deterioration of the muscles, connective tissues and the joints. Everything that involves the loss of ones range of motion, even victims of paralysis, benefit from the hot tub spa treatment. Joints are loosened and the aches and pains are alleviated through time spent in the warm water. So be it just to simply relax, or be it to treat these various diseases, a hot tub spa is affordable and will enhance the lives of all those deciding to add one to their lifestyle and to their home.

Central Park Move

When picking a mover or simply trying to learn the lingo of moving, the place you should start is the user forum Movingscam.com . I found this site when I was staying at a Hotel Central Park while on business in New York and this site was invaluable for my move. The forums are moderated by a number of people involved in the moving industry and people who have years upon years of expertise. While these very moderators won’t tell you which movers to use, the do maintain an invaluable Blacklist of companies with bad histories, and they keep up a very clean message boards and review boards specific to many moving companies and also to many moving popular routes. For example, I found a few NYC to DC forums with insights and reviews by people who had recently made the exact same move. A move with which I was planning.

As a result, I found a fantastic moving company who gave me a competitive price and stuck to it. They were very professional, no shuttle was required because of the fact they use a small truck, and what I found to most important, they delivered all of my items in tact on the very day they promised they would. All in All, it was a great experience, and I would definitely recommend to anyone moving to use the site I mentioned above.

Once you choose your mover, the next question that comes up is where to get moving boxes of all sizes. I recommend first to try the moving company that you chose, but also compare the pricing with other moving companies because pricing varies significantly. Second, you can order boxes on line, just Google ‘moving boxes’ and well over a millions sites pop-up. The majority of on-line box suppliers ship the boxes for free. Third you can by boxes from your local Mail and Shipping stores like, Staples, Home Depot or UPS stores. I found Home Depot http://www.homedepotcenter.com/ to have the best selection and pricing.

Over all, I was very fortunate that my move went off as smoothly as it did. Moving to New York, I thought would be a very scary ordeal, but with a little bit of research on my part, help me in the long run.

The Gardens of Singapore

The city of Singapore boasts some of the most beautiful gardens of the world. Many are designs with not only the plant life in mind, but the architecture as well. One such is the Chinese Garden. In 1975, this garden was designed by a well known man from Taiwan, Prof Yuen-chen Yu. He created it with the model of Imperial China. One enters the garden by way of the White Rainbow Bridge. Once inside the pagoda there are fishponds, courtyards and a building that replicates the temples used by ancient Buddhists for the burial and containment of human remains. Two aspects that personify the traditions of ancient architectural design of China are the Tea House and the Stone boat. The streams and paths and the design and manipulation of the plants create a tranquil and well balanced scene. There is also a Bonsai garden with more than one thousand trees. Here one can view their tiny and perfect beauty or take a class in caring for them.

Two more such gardens are the Mandai Orchid Garden and the Singapore Botanic Garden. The Mandai is conveniently located around other Singapore attractions, including a variety of restaurants, 5 star Singapore hotels, and the Zoo. This garden is a fifty year old sanctuary. On the hills of the garden, among natural landscaping and waterways there are orchids upon orchids, a variety of different hybrids. There is an incredible restaurant within the center of the garden so visitors may enjoy fancy meals in the midst of the incredible flowers. The Botanic garden is located in the middle of the city. There are many rare species here, and the garden also contains over 20,000 orchids in bloom. The first garden specifically created for children is located here and offers classes and lectures dedicated to the study of plants and flowers and the continuing dedication to the protection of the environment. The garden offers musical concerts at the outdoor amphitheater as well as gourmet dining establishments. The care of the gardens by the city of Singapore is no doubt a reflection of the fact that Singapore is in the rain forest. One of only two cities in the world located in the rain forest, the environment and the care of it is of the utmost concern for this country. The gardens offer not only tranquility and peace but a reminder as to just how important the plant and animal life is to the survival of their culture and the survival of all cultures around the world.

Rugs for Every Room

I have tile and hardwood floors throughout my entire house. I really prefer this over carpet because it is much easier to clean and I get to buy rugs to go with my decor. And another thing that I like is that they can be cleaned easily, replaced easily and you can get them to match anything.

I have two shag rugs in my bedroom because the room is sort of divided into a bedroom area and a sitting area. Having two rugs keeps my feet warm and the room separated yet open. I love the floor plan of my master bedroom because I practically have two living rooms.

I love rugs so much that I even have an outdoor rug on my back patio. It makes the patio feel like it’s a part of the inside and it makes my house seem bigger than it really is. They keep your feet warm and they go with any decor and in any room, inside or outside, that you can imagine.
