Toddler Skills, Toddler Furniture

Every stage of childhood development is important, and every stage seems precarious. In fact, each stage seems more precarious than the last, until they get to be teenagers, at which point the parents have developed some coping skills for dealing with their own anxieties as their children get ready to face the world. For all the stages, however, it does seem to be more intense during the toddler years.

This is the point when they are getting some idea of how their motor functions work. The toddler is ready to start trying out many different physical activities, whether their muscles have control or not. The scramble to make the house ready for a new-born is suddenly turned up a few notches, and the sleep-deprived parents will very likely start noticing that nearly everything in the house is a potential threat.

The threats are often simply the result of sleep deprivation and an over-active imagination. Even in the light of reason and a good night’s sleep, however, getting the right toddler furniture is a sensible idea. It’s constructed with the needs and abilities of the toddler in mind. Safety is the first measure of quality, but there are plenty of options for choosing the right decor to match what’s already in the home. Peace of mind can come with a sense of style.

Diwali in Goa

Soon, many cultures around the world will be celebrating the festival known as Diwali. This is one festival that is practiced in many countries of the world, but remains relatively unknown in the United States. During this time, the cities of India, Trinidad, Nepal and Fiji will be celebrating with much merriment, and many fireworks. This is associated with gambling, but not in the traditional sense, it means taking a huge risk on the chance to welcome into their lives the goddess of wealth, Lakshmi.

The word itself is translated from Sanskrit to mean the rows of light. There are several differing myths surrounding the festivals depending upon which city you are celebrating in, the main myth in the Indian city of Goa is just the triumph of good over evil, the light over the dark. I chose to spend a few weeks surrounding this festival in one of the city’s four star hotels. Goa history fascinates as well as their love of and support of the arts, so I thought this would be a fine choice to experience this celebration for the first time.

In Goa, Krishna is also celebrated during the parties and the feasts and the dancing. This is one of the most joyous of the Hindu traditions and the people await the Diwali festival all year long. People light the town with thousands of candles and lanterns and the night just fills with the beauty of the vibe, and the magic of the lights. The feeling of this particular time is similar to the celebrating that occurs during New Year’s Eve or Christmas. Diwali is also a time of renewal, houses are cleaned and painted fresh, and again as in the tradition of making New Year’s Resolutions, people vow to begin new lives. Lights of bright colors are draped over the houses and the stores, the fireworks light the skies, and a new time will be born. I will miss this celebration this year, but perhaps the opportunity will arise again before too long to make it back to Goa.

Nightlife in the City

I didn’t know London could have a good nightlife, especially when I found out that all the pubs close around 11pm. But, when I walked into the Asylum in New Kingston, I felt like I was a Jamaican clubber. That’s where I found out where else I could go for the few nights I have here in London. I was so happy to get this list, I wrote them all down on a bar napkin and stuck it in my pocket, hoping to not lose it while I danced the night away in total club bliss.

London, has several clubs like Cameos on Margaret and W1, my fellow clubbers told me it’s more upscale and located right in the heart of London’s West End. But they told me is a must before I leave. The next place on my list is Buds, Lower Clapton road and Hackney, a small intimate club which specializes in ‘bashment’ style music. I didn’t know what that was, but I acted like it did, so I would still look cool in front of my new found clubbing friends. Third on my list was Subterrania, Ladbroke Grove, Chis Goldfinger and David Rodigan spin there on different nights, and oh yeah, I wrote, Chris Goldfinger also spins at Cameos. I do hope I managed to make it to Subterrania, that sounds perfect for me, a modern mix of music is played there.

I flipped my napkin over and wrote down, Nightmoves on Shoreditch High Street, it’s there favorite place that recently re-opened and caters to a more mature crowd, playing reggea, soca, dancehall and lover’s rock. I don’t know why a mature crowd is one of their favorite places to chill, but if I have the time, I’ll check it out. Mature crowds sounds to old school to me. Last on my paper napkin list was Illusions Club, on Streatham, a mix of hiphop, R&B, reggae is played there. Hearing about all these clubs made me happy that I booked a City Hotel http://www.cityhotel.co.uk, I was worried that London just wasn’t a clubber’s heaven. In these next few nights I’m hoping to be proving wrong, big time.

Upon his death it was immediately declared the King of Pop had died, and it is a title that will remain with him as willhis great musical legacy. It is similar to the labeling of Elvis as the King of Rock and Roll when he died, and the phrase was often included in news casts that covered his death. He was loved for his music, his dancing, his personality and the many charities to which he contributed.

Jackson began his career as part of the Jackson Five, which was comprised of the Jackson brothers. He achieved great respect and recognition at a very early age and propelled the band to many hits. They quickly became a Motown favorite, which was uncommon for youth bands at the time. His fast moves and angelic voice impacted audiences across racial boundaries. This would become one of his major contributions to the industry, as he would later blast through boundaries that kept black artists from performing on the fledgling MTV program. His Thriller video would become the most popular and highly demanded video MTV would present.

Jackson came into his own as a performer with his solo album Off The Wall, though he had previous albums that were well received. This was his first major release as an adult artist and began his rise to superstardom. It was the release of Thriller, however, that solidified Jackson in the hearts of people across the world. It became the number one selling record of all time. Thriller contained the hits Billie Jean, Beat It, Wanna Be Startin’ Something, PYT and more. His concerts always sold out instantly wherever he performed. It is unfortunate that he was not able to perform his final tour, and promoters offered refunds for the concert tickets that were sold for the London performances. Many people declined the offer, however and instead decided to hold onto their tickets as a tribute and memento to this great artist.

Generational Concert Goers: A Grandmother’s Perspective

My grandson is almost 14 is an avid concert fan, as is his mother-my daughter. He’s lucky his mother shares this passion with him and is willing to get tickets for the concert and off they go. Course now at his age it isn’t really cool to go with your mother, but they have a great time together and he really wants to go! One of the most recent concerts they saw was Bruce Springsteen in Glendale, Arizona and they have plans to see the upcoming concert of Green Day in Phoenix. There is also a three-in-one concert coming up in Phoenix and they will see Def Leppard, Poison and Cheap Trick. AC/DC is another one they will see in Phoenix in October. On his list of really wanting to see is Slash with Velvet Revolver, Elton John and The Fallout Boy. Some of these I have never heard of, or seen, but he’s excited so I listen and am excited with him.

Now if we talk about Johnny Cash or Don Williams or Conway Twitty or George Strait…those were concerts I attended and can really get excited about! Talk about entertainers and talent, that’s a whole different story. I saw Johnny and June a couple times in Omaha, Nebraska many years ago and what a show they put on. I was a young woman and thought Johnny was the greatest thing since sliced bread. And of course the excitement and electricity of being there was unforgettable. I saw Don Williams, Conway Twitty and George Strait after moving to Phoenix, Arizona and their concerts were just as exciting. I’m lucky because Jared also enjoys a lot of Country singers I do. But no matter your age or generation, no matter your taste in music, you go to a live concert and it forges yet another common bond of happy memories that erase the years between a granny and her adored grandson. Memories that take up residence in a special place in both hearts, memories that will live on.

The Artistic Magic of Meenakari and Kundan Jewelry Makers

The Mughals are responsible for the level of artistry that is exhibited in modern jewelry craftsman in the city of Dehli, India today. The two different techniques are the Meenakari and the Kundan. Both are just equally splendid and intricate, and neither one really outshines the other. The Kundan art form is inspired by the Mughals, and involves setting precious stones and gems into intricate patterns of sculpted silver and gold. This isn’t just seen in the jewelry, many buildings and Delhi 5 star hotels are decorated in this gilded manner, the most famous of those buildings being the Taj Mahal . The gems are laid in a bed of gold leaf, they are not secured by the claw or rim. This is a much more artistic piece of art, more than just a mere necklace orbracelet.

Meenakari is the craft of enamel-work. This was introduced to Delhi by the Hindu Punjabis of Lahore. Enameling was originally just used to ensure the protection of gold. Gold in its pure state is malleable and very soft and easily worn away. The fashion of the Mughals was to enamel the backside of the jewelry in order to protect it from the skin, as just the contact of the gold with skin caused it to wear. The technique involves the hollowing out of the surfaces of silver or gold, to make a space for a particular mineral. Different minerals produce different colors during the firing process. Any single piece of jewelry that is the result of using both the techniques of Kundan and Meenakari are said to be so magnificent and astounding that one often refers to them as one of the wishes granted after rubbing the magic lamp of Aladdin.

The Care of an Island

Research programs in environmental studies are being carried out on the Island if Ibiza. The Universities of Madrid and Valencia, together with the Ecological Team for the Balearic Isles, have come together to collect data, and to continue their tasks of monitoring island activities and research in the Nature Reserve, Salinas de Formentera y Ibiza. Some items kept a close eye on are the number of forest fires that occur there each year, and the impact that has on the landscape, the environment and the various endemic species. The quality and the quantity of water usage and resources is also kept track of. Each year, thousands of visitors travel to the islands, adding to the 15,000 locals that live in the towns neighboring the reserve. Scientists, botanists and archaeologists have studied human impact on the ecosystem of the island as well. The waters of the Mediterranean which surround the beaches, are clean and pristine, but over the years concern about the number of boats and recreational water vehicles has increased. The area underwater, is filled with various species of marine life and mammals. And is also home to fields of sea grass and corral reefs, that are threaten either by the boats’ motors or the exhaust or both. The underwater grass is not only responsible for cleaning the sea water, but provides habitat and safety to the fish and other sea dwelling creatures.

The Reserve site, which sits just outside the towns of Saint Joseph and Saint Francesco, just aside the 5 star Ibiza hotels and party beaches, is now protected by the government, as it was named a cultural and natural Heritage Site. With respect to the environment archaeologists are now uncovering in the underwater caves and along the sea floor, sites that date back to the Bronze age. Understanding these sites and creating catalogues of these artifacts will bring a greater understanding to the history and evolution of not just the island of Ibiza but of all the Balearic Islands surrounding the coast of Mainland Spain. The delicate care taken by the scientists has ensured that this will continue to be a working ecosystem, between that of the natural world and the world as human beings affect it.

The Eye and the Mind of the Artist

The artist must train the eyes. Train the way the brain and the hands work together. While most have the belief that artistic talent is born, much of it is, to be honest, learned. And throughout all times of creation, and in this time right now, artists have so created a very subtle and very intense relationship between what the eyes see and the ability to get the hands to put that on paper or canvas or to pull it out the marble or clay. And while some create landscape paintings or floral designs, and some build buildings or design houses, others are right now, designing the 2015 model for the next BMW. Artists have stated that the most difficult subject to capture, is the human form. Years are spent in art schools around the world, spent with students drawing and observing the human form. And it is said quite frequently in the art world, that if you can paint a human you can paint anything. In Singapore it has become an ironic situation, for as the country is striving to be atop the list of the most successful and artistic in the creative world, to join the company of New York or Paris or Rome, the ideas that are ingrained in their culture regarding nudity, create a bit of conundrum. The nude body is needed in art class, but the models are viewed in negative light. A nude model in Singapore is seen by some as unethical or lacking character, and is regarded in much the same way as the prostitute is regarded in society.

Singapore is desiring to thrive in the world of international art, and to be in the company of such cultural and artistic heartbeats as Paris with salons in the 1920′s or as Manhattan with Washington Square Park in the 1960′s. The government holds sessions to attempt to ‘figure out’ how these cities garnered such a following and such an emotional, as well as technical and economic, following. Festivals are planned such as the Biennale or the Showcase Singapore, draw crowds, but leave the local artists wondering if it is really about the art, or just simply about the commerce. And every business, the business of art as well, must be concerned with the bottom line, Singapore 5 star resorts are just as concerned with the economy as the artist selling their work on the street. The point is, that much of was is created in art is the body, and in a city-state wherein so many are investigating ways to climb the ladder, the view of the nude form seems a bit old fashioned. Some of the most famous pieces throughout art history are based on the nude, and in Singapore, galleries have been required by law to remove some of those paintings from their walls. Artists have been forced to censor what they create. This topic has prompted heated debates and discussions, in relation to not only the art world, but the views as a culture and society on the whole.

A Look at Beads

Hobby stores in the US today usually have at least one aisle devoted to the art of beading. In fact, the popularity of beadwork and other jewellery-making has grown to the poin that even smaller cities and larger towns have at least one bead store. Online bead marketplaces and forums are also quite popular with the thousands of modern beadworkers.

There is no doubt that beadwork is an ancient art. The oldest pieces of jewellery in the world are a trio of beads that are between 90,000 and 100,000 years old. Made from Nassarius sea snail shells, the three beads are pea-sized and sport nearly identical holes. Researchers believe this proves the beads could have been strung together into a bracelet or necklace. Two of these historic beads were discovered in Skhul Cave which is situated on Mount Carmel in Israle. The other was found in Algeria at the Oued Djebbana site. These beads are 25,000 years older than previously discovered jewellery items.

By definition a bead is a decorative small object that has been pierced to permit stringing or threading. Today beads vary in size from smaller than a millimeter to a diameter of several centimeters. Many beads are in the centimer range.

Traditional beads are made from natural materials. This includes stone, bone, clay, resin, wood, coral, shell, and gemstones. Synthethic materials are also in popular use as bead materials. Plastic, glass, polymer clay, and metal beads are abundant. Still other types of beads include seeds, paper, ceramic, and fiber.

Beadwork is any craft or art that employs beads in the final product. Beads can be strung onto wire, thread, or other fiber to create earrings, bracelets, and necklaces. Woven beadwork employs special thread to create patterns and images, much like weaving cloth. Many native and indigenous tribes in American are known for this type of beadwork. Another use for beads is affixing them to a surface such as clay or fabric as decoration.

Some of the more brilliant beads available today include fire-polished beads, lead crystal beads, and fused glass beads. Cloisonne beads, lucite beads, and pressed glass beads can also provide beautiful options for jewellery and woven beadwork.

New York’s Fashion Week

Today the fashion elite begin to gather in New York for their twice-annual runway extravaganza. The newly-named Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week will run in Bryant Park through February 20th. The event showcases the fall lines of many of the top American designers and design houses to fashion critics, press, and buyers.

Fashion Week dates back to 1943 when Eleanor Lambert an important fashion publicist, organized the event to call attention to American designers. In the middle of World War II it was impossible for the press and buyers to travel to France. “Press Week” forced the media to focus on American innovators and trends. A great success, fashion magazines began to feature more and more American fashions in their pages.

While there was some question about the success of a luxury event in the current economy, Fashion Week is going on as usual. However, many designers are scaling back their expenses. Some are showing fewer designs to save on fabric and production costs while others are forfeiting a runway show in the park and instead inviting guests to drop in shows. Magazines are sending fewer representatives to save on their costs, as the fashion publishing world has been hit not only by the economic crisis, but also by the decline of magazine publishing with the rise of the internet.

None of this means that the glamour will be missing from the event. Celebrities will be filling up New York hotel suites in the area and top designers will still be putting on elaborate and exciting runway shows in the huge Bryant Park tents. Look for ongoing media coverage in television, newspapers, and online.

The Spring Fashion Week will be held in September. Next year Fashion Week ill move to Damrosch Park in Lincoln Center.

Delhi’s Qutub Complex

Visitors to the ancient Indian city of Delhi will find a surprising mixture of the old and the new. The city itself is divided into two areas: “Old Delhi” which reflects Islamic India and “New Delhi” which contains many relics of British colonialism. As the capital of India, it often provides an entry point for travelers heading on to other destinations in central India such as the Punjab. Those who choose to explore the city will find a number of excellent Delhi five star hotels, amazing restaurants, and one-of-a-kind shopping experiences in the many markts and bazaars.

Delhi is also known for its many historic landmarks. One of the most famous is the Qutub Complex in Mehrauli, south Delhi. The complex dates back to the Slave Dynasty of 1206-1290 and is one of India’s treasured World Heritage Sites. It consists of several structures, some of which are now in ruins. The gardens in the complex are still intact and beautifully maintained, making it a popular spot for picnics, people-watching, and just relaxing away from the din of the city. Most nights the complex hosts a light and sound show.

The iconic structure in the complex is Qutub Minar. Considered a “skyscraper” in its own time (it was built between 1193 and 1368), the minaret rises 72.5 meters above the ground. It’s delicate carvings have been carefully preserved through the centuries making it one of the most stunning structures in India. The annual Qutub Festival features Qutub Minar as the backdrop for nightly cultural performances of dance and music.

The Quwwat-ul-Islam Mosque is the oldest and grandest of Delhi’s mosques. While mostly a ruin, some of the structure and sandstone decorations remain. The Iron Pillar is seven-meters tall and has survived for over 1600 years. Other structures of interest in the complex inclue Ala-i-Minar, a tower that was never finished, Ala-i-Darwaza and the Tomb of Imam Zamin.
