Tax Season is Here

Posted in Finance

Doing taxes is not something that most people enjoy. Over the years a dread of taxes has become commonplace. This cultural attitude has been ingrained in the popular imagination through references in movies, books, and television. It has also been perpetuated by the media, who like to turn anything and everything into a crisis. People dread tax season and do whatever they can to put off dealing with reporting their income and filing their tax returns every year.

It is surprising to realize that, for most people, the act of preparing and filing their taxes is actually uneventful. They simply gather the requisite documents, spend a few hours filling out the forms or drop them off with a tax preparer, and then either sign a check for taxes owed or receive a refund.

The process itself is not hard at all — and certainly not worthy of all the anxiety and dread that they build up in their mind about filing taxes. Anyone who has a complicated tax situation or who just doesn’t want to be bothered to do the work themselves will find a number of companies who specialize in taxes prep services that will be more than willing to help them. Those with simple returns can easily find online software for completing their returns and can even efile to save time and paper.

The Electric Cigarette Alternative

Posted in Leisure

For the longest time cigarette smokers have faced two choices: continue with their habit or quit. There was no middle ground. Non-smoking friends and family would bombard them with the dangers and hazards associated with smoking and society as a whole has slowly excluded smokers from enjoying their habit in any remotely public place.

Now there is an alternative to traditional smokes which, while it is not officially a healthy option, eliminates so many of the problems and issues related to smoking as to make it very attractive to many smokers. This wonder product is the smokeless, or electric, cigarette.

electric cigarettes provide nicotine in a manner that simulates a regular cigarette. This gives smokers the ability to enjoy the sensation of smoking without the hassles associated with actual smoke — and they still get their hit of nicotine in the process.

Most of the problems that most people connect to smoking have to do with the actual smoke. When that aspect is eliminated, non-smokers can no longer complain about cigarettes encroaching on their personal health and enjoyment. Smokeless cigarettes can be used in any place the bans smoking and smokers will no longer be subject to nagging and lecturing by non-smokers.

Other advantages include convenience (no need to carry lighters or worry about ashes and ash trays), expense (e cigarettes can cost up to fifty percent less than tobacco cigarettes), and aesthetic improvements (there is no smoke smell clinging to hair, clothes, etc., and no smoke stains on the fingers or teeth).

What Medical Conditions Qualify for Workers Compensation?

Posted in Legal

Being injured on the job is an overwhelming and sometimes terrifying experience. Severe injures can require hospitalization, physical therapy, and weeks or months away from work. In addition to those obvious types of injuries, there are plenty of less serious injuries as well as ongoing medical conditions that can qualify for workers compensation benefits. Understanding what it takes to qualify is the first step in determining if a worker should file a claim or hire a Fort Lauderdale Workers Compensation Attorney .

In general, any type of disease or injury could qualify a worker to benefits. It’s not really about seeing a long list of approved conditions. To qualify under workers compensation laws, it’s more important how the injury or illness occurred. If there is a connection between job duties and a given injury or disease, then it is highly likely the worker will qualify. The question to ask is whether or not the injury or disease occurred at work and because of work.

Those are two separate and distinct questions that each must be proven to the satisfaction of the workers comp insurance company. First that the condition or injury happened at work. That is the easier one to prove. Next it must have occurred during or because of work. Not in the parking lot or break room, etc., but in the course of performing work duties. If a worker, or their lawyer, can prove that the condition or injury is work-related, then they should be entitled to full benefits under workers compensation. This means anything from broken bones, to herniated discs to carpal tunnel syndrome to heart or lung problems may be eligible, as long as it can be traced back to work.
