There are a great number of things to do in Austin, as well as a great selection of cultural attractions and entertainment options. One of the frequent things that many people who visit this great Texan city are slightly hesitant about, though return home loving and making a family tradition out of, has recently made the news. The New York Times has recently featured an article on the growing trend to have tacos for breakfast. This is actually a rather common breakfast menu option in Austin and while it sounds somewhat suspicious and frequently surprises people when they first hear about it, many of them go ahead and try it and discover that it’s actually a great breakfast meal.
Many people throughout the southwest are familiar with the idea of a breakfast burrito and this is actually a common menu item for the first meal of the day at southwestern restaurants. However, it is extremely uncommon, in fact for many people unheard of, to have a taco for breakfast . And these are just the population of individuals who frequently leave Austin with a new favorite breakfast food. Of course that happens after a moment of disbelief, followed by a brief attempt at indignation and before insisting on watching someone else eat one so early in the morning. Then there is the forced visual unimpressed expression, which is then followed by a feigned disinterest in the whole idea while ordering a short-stack with bacon. The following morning that same person is likely to express an inability to find anything appetizing and then somewhat begrudgingly orders a taco.
People that work at places like the Tamale House in Austin are used to this scene and it’s always fun to watch the customer act amazed that they really enjoyed their breakfast taco, when it was certain they were going to. And while tacos for breakfast are becoming slightly more common in other cities, Austin is frequently credited with being the source of the trend. This is sometimes believed to be due to the fact that people wake up at all times of the day, and many non-traditionally breakfast designated foods are becoming the first thing they eat. Regardless of how or why this is happening, news of the breakfast taco is slowing spreading across the nation as tourists leave Austin with a new favorite breakfast meal.
