In addition to being the city of brotherly love, Philadelphia could be called the city of quality advanced education. Philadelphia University is a small private school that was founded in 1884. The original mission of the institution was to raise the level of art and technology of the American textile industry to international standards. And while this was an incredibly ambitious initial mission, the school has grown and added new programs and areas of study while retaining its strong standards of excellence. Drexel University is another private school and it was founded seven years after PU in 1891. It has a larger student body than PU and was originally established by the noted philanthropist Anthony J Drexel as an institute of art, science and industry. Two of the more prestigious and recent additions to the university are the College of Medicine and School of Law.
Temple University is a major public research university in Philadelphia. It is also the largest of the three mentioned schools with a total student body of around 40,000 students. It is one of the state’s three public research schools, along with Penn State and the University of Pittsburgh. The school is consistently rated as being among the top ten research schools in the nation and it is the 26th largest university in the country. Temple was established in the same year as PU, which marked the beginning of a great academic tradition in the city.
