Valencia annual tomato fight is a blast! The origin and reason for this event is unknown but the it has grown enormous in size and draws international attention from world wide media. The town where the festival fight is held is actually called Bunol, it is close to Valencia. You can get transportation from your 5 star hotels Valencia to Bunol easily. People come from all over the world to participate in this tomato fight, Australian, Britain’s, Americans and others took there place in the plaza. An estimate of some 40,000 people and 100 tons of ripe tomatoes make this a wild affair. By its end the street, everyone and everything are covered in the red pulp. The annual fight known as the Tomtina has been occurring now for over 60 years. The towns council sponsors the event and provides the ripe tomatoes. Once the battle erupts the tomatoes fly for about an hour and a half, by then everything is covered in the red pulp and the participants standing ankle deep in tomato soup. Many men go shirtless while other don worn out old cloths, goggles, plastic sheets and costumes. The shop keepers put up protective plastic coverings to cover up their store front and protect them from the splattering tomato. Once the battling is over the people covered participants head to the river where temporary showers are set up to clean themselves up and big hoses are hauled into the street and walls, street and everything else are hosed down with water to clean up the mess. This event is held every year in Bunol, just 25 miles from Valencia in the fertile plains. How the event came into being is unclear but legend tells of a a food foght between child hoof friends in the 1940′s may be the origin.

Watching Birds in Jakarta
We were in the Muara Angke Wildlife Reserve also known as the Suaka Margasatwa Muara Angke, SMMA, which is apparent the last mangrove forest in Jakarta when we saw a burst of brilliantly colored birds explode from a tree followed by a long tailed monkey, which caused a chorus of monkey to howl an carry on. We had left the bustle and street life of Jakarta for a tropical forested gem in search of rare birds, the rarest the bubut Jawa (Javan Coucal) at this little known but important wild out post in this heavily developed land. there has been an increased concern for wild habitat, especially for birds, and renewed efforts are being made to protect the natural environment. While there, we managed to capture with our digital cameras after spotting them with binoculars. We were keen to see a white breasted water hen, and the Prenjak Jawa, which we hoped against hope we would at least hear, as we had listened to recordings of the this rare bird back home in Oklahoma City. We also enjoyed the many plants we was in the park,including the api api, and the buta-buta both of which are great fun to say. In fact, these are great names for cats. Or great names for Jakarta hotels. Oddly, one tree had the outline in its bark that we swore looked like Hillary Swank, one of our favorite actresses. Meanwhile, places like arevitally important, as thy provide many of the medicines and medicinal compounds used to save live all over the world. No one knows what great discoveries are awaiting us in theses rare tropical plants and animals. That’s why it is so important to protect the natural environment.
