The diamond industry in South Africa was initiated on the major scale into which its become began with the simple discovery that occurred in 1867. In that year, Erasmus Jacobs found a diamond along the Orange River. Almost immediately after, the area was entirely exploited into a major investigative dig that lead to the diamond mining industry becoming one of South Africa’s major economic factors. The main find occurred in Kimberley Pipes a few years after the Jacobs find. South Africa’s gold mining business entered a full bloom stage shortly after the take off of the mining industry. In 1886, the Witwatersrand gold rush occurred, which lead the to the establishment of Johannesburg. This was not the only burst of gold mining that occurred at the time, though it is one of the largest and most culturally, as well as industry significant. Its coal exportation industry is the third largest in the world, and it is the second largest exporter of other minerals.
